Does Your Nutrition Nourish Your Life?

When you hear the word nutrition, what do you think?  Your diet? Vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients? Kale? Juicing?  No doubt. What you eat is essential for your health. However, that’s not the whole story.  Nutrition is more than just the food we eat.

The definition of nutrition is the process of being nourished.  To be nourished is to provide what is necessary for life, health, and growth.  This definition speaks to what the Western world is only beginning to embrace – to achieve optimal health, you must nourish your mind, body, and soul.  It’s all connected.  You can’t separate what/how you eat from the rest of your life.  So what do you need to maintain your life, health and growth?  Water. Oxygen. Exercise. Shelter. Sleep. Love. Relaxation. Fun. Music. Flowers. The Ocean. Poetry. Art. Animals. Etc.

This Valentine’s Day give yourself an expression of love and caring.  Commit to living a more nourished life, one habit at a time.  Let’s find 2-3 small steps you can take this month to improve your life, health, and growth.

Here are a few non-food ideas:

  • Write a list of things that bring you pleasure and force yourself to schedule time to do something on the list.
  • Banish multi-tasking by focusing on one thing at a time.
  • Write a Daily Dialogue. Take a few minutes to dump all that mind chatter that argues with you all day and night
  • Take a painting class. Tapping into your creativity may unleash so much more.
  • Make choices that are easy, natural and enjoyable. Ask “does this meet the criteria?” If no, then say ‘no’ more often.
